DaWanda is an Internet service which was launched in fall 2006 through which professional artisans, artists, designers and ambitious individuals sell products they produced themselves.
The idea of DaWanda is to give the producer behind the product a face. DaWanda paves the way to a better and more eventful consumption: As a countermovement to industrialised mass consumption and taste DaWanda addresses a sophisticated target group searching for first-class and individual products, elaborate production techniques and personal contact with the producer.
DaWanda consolidates this demand for producers who design or produce products themselves but as of yet haven’t had a sufficient professional and wide-ranging sales platform: fashion designers, students, prospective product designers, artisans, artists or also amateur artists can open their own shop on DaWanda free of charge and offer their products in a high-class environment. The business model DaWanda uses is similar to the one at eBay: The platform receives a small fee depending on the sales price. All other services which DaWanda offers vendors as well as customers are completely free of charge. The sales platform does not receive any money until the product is sold.
DaWanda was launched by Claudia Helming and Michael Pütz in fall 2006 and is available in German and English. The company is based in Berlin. Partners are Claudia Helming, Michael Pütz and sprd.net AG, Leipzig.
